Yuncheng has 1 district, 2 county-level cities, 10 counties, 133 townships (offices) and 3, 338 administrative villages under its jurisdiction. The city covers a total area of 14,000 square kilometers and has a total population of 5.05 million. The city government is located in the Salt Lake District in the center of the city, which, with a total area of 1, 237 square kilometers and a population of 500 thousand, is the political, economic and cultural center of the city. Known as Hedong in ancient times, Yuncheng City is located in southwestern Shanxi Province and is separated from Shaanxi Province and Henan Province by the Yellow River. With the latitude 33.05--35.50 degrees and the longitude 110.15—112.04 degrees, the city’s terrain inclines from Northeast to Southwest, except for the two mountains in the south and north. The city has an average altitude of 450 meters. The city’s main mountain range is Zhongtiao Mountain, which stretches more than 350 kilometers. Main rivers include the Yellow River, Fenhe River and Sushui River, which wind through the district, 2 county-level cities and 10 counties. The city enjoys a temperate continental monsoon climate and is hot and windy. With four distinct seasons and plentiful sunshine, it has an annual rainfall of 550 mm and an annual average temperature of 13.5 degrees Celsius. It also enjoys an annual frost-free period of 260 days.
As a birthplace of the Chinese nation, Yuncheng City has a very long history. Scenic spots and historical sites spread all over the city, including more than 1, 600 heritage sites, of which 22 are national heritage conservation units. Those well known to the world include Guandi Temple at Xiezhou (Hometown of God of War), the Stork Tower in Yongji (one of the four famous towers in China), Yongle Palace in Ruicheng County (the arts palace), the Yongji Pujiu Temple (where the story depicted in a famous Chinese romantic drama West Chamber took place), the Wanrong Houtu Temple (a sacred place for Chinese to worship god), the Salt Lake in Yuncheng (Chinese Dead Sea) as well as Shundi Mausoleum, Big Iron Ox of the Yellow River, Wanrong Autumn Wind Tower, Sima Guang's Tomb in Xia County, and so on. There are Yun-Feng (Yuncheng-Lingdu) expressway, Yun-San (Yuncheng-Sanmen Gorge) expressway, Hou-Yun (Houma-Yuncheng) expressway as well as Yumenkou, Fenglingdu and Sanmen Gorge bridges over the Yellow River, which link the northwest, southwest and central region to form crisscrossed network with Luoyang, Zhengzhou and Xi’an. The city has 8, 611 kilometers of highway and 235 kilometers of expressway respectively, both ranking in the first place of the Shanxi Province. The high-speed network circling the city center and the one-hour economic circle to all counties (county-level cities) have been basically formed. Air flight lines from Yuncheng to Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Kunming, Taiyuan, Nanjing, Xiamen, Haikou, Urumqi, Chongqing, and Hohhot have been opened, which form an air channel for Yuncheng to explore the country and the world and take lead in air traffic in the Golden Triangle of the Yellow River. Yuncheng has always been a wheat and cotton base of Shanxi Province and even China. 11 counties (county-level cities, district) of 13 were named the commodity grain bases in Shanxi Province, of which 6 were classified as the national commodity grain bases and 2 were listed as the national commodity cotton bases. It was called the “Ukraine of Shanxi” for one time.
In recent years, by adhering to the improvement of yields through scientific methods, Yuncheng City has formed five major industries, including fruits, livestock, vegetables and cotton. With over 3 million mu (2 thousand square kilometers) land used for apple cultivation, Yuncheng City has become a national base of high-quality fruits. Ten famous agricultural products of the city include wheat, cotton, apples, Jishan jujube, Wangguo pear, Jiangxian hawthorn, Puzhou persimmon, Linjin jade melon, Wanrong ox and Yellow River carp, with a group of high-quality agricultural products successfully entering the capital Beijing and international markets. Yuncheng City is a critical part of the energy, heavy machine and chemical base and also a rising industrial base of Shanxi. There are the Nafine Group as the largest inorganic salt manufacturing base, Yuncheng Plate Making Group with the largest capacity in the world, Shanxi Aluminum Plant as the largest aluminum industrial base in Asia, Zhongtiaoshan Non-ferrous Metals Group Co., Ltd as the second largest copper smelting base in China, Yongji Electric Motor Factory as a leading enterprise of the Ministry of Railways of P.R.C. and other large companies. In recent years, six industrial clusters with local features have taken shape, i.e. aluminum, steel and magnesium metallurgical industry cluster, daily chemicals, coal chemicals and pharmaceutical industry cluster, machinery and precision casting industry cluster, new materials and glassware industry cluster, agricultural and sideline products processing industry cluster, tertiary industry cluster with tourism as the key industry.
The city now has 3, 562 schools of various kinds at different levels, including 2, 650 primary schools, 358 junior high school, 71 senior high schools, 47 secondary vocational schools, 422 kindergarten, 7 special education schools and 7 colleges and universities.
